We've all felt it before. You wake up in the morning, get out of bed, and notice your joints feel stiff. This usually goes away as your muscles and tendons have a chance to stretch out and warm up. For some people though, this stiffness is more persistent. If you're one of them, here are 3 things you can do to ease the discomfort. One: get treated. If you're plagued by stiff joints it's usually a sign of an underlying condition like bursitis, arthritis, or fibromyalgia-which cause swelling, making it harder to move. Getting properly diagnosed and put on the right medication can help prevent future flare-ups.Two: step on a scale. Being overweight puts enormous pressure on your joints. For example, an 10 extra pounds means your knee joints have to withstand an additional 30 to 60 pounds of force while walking, which lead to stiffness. LOSING a few extra pounds can significantly REDUCE the stress on joints. And THREE:...REMAIN ACTIVE. Just 30 minutes of exercise a few days a week can improve your range of motion, AND help keep the muscles surrounding a joint strong and supportive. If your joint stiffness is paired with pain, try to stick with low-impact activities like biking, swimming, and stretching. If your joint swelling is caused by infection or a chronic condition like arthritis, avoiding it may be difficult. Your best line of defense is to get the proper treatment which can help you MINIMIZE repeat flare-ups. For infection, this means antibiotics. For those with arthritis, physical therapy can help you build muscle around your joints AND teach you how movements that will help you avoid pain. For swelling that is triggered by over-use as with tendinitis, avoiding another case may be as simple as taking regular breaks from an activity, strengthening the surrounding muscles, and improving your technique-which a trainer or physical therapist can help you with. Icing the swollen area for 20 minutes (not more) several times a day may reduce the inflammation and discomfort temporarily. The telltale sign of an ACL injury is the POPPING sound it makes as the ligament tears. This is usually combined with INTENSE pain and instability of the knee to the point where it feels as if it's giving out. It'll become almost impossible to stand on. For hours afterward, swelling in your knee will continue to grow. If you suspect you've hurt your ACL, do NOT try to move your leg. It can only do more damage. Instead, splint your knee to keep it from bending until you've see a doctor for x-rays. For minor injuries, treatment includes ice packs, painkillers, and knee splinting. The patient will usually need physical therapyto re-strengthen the knee muscles and to regain full range of motion. Surgery and rehab is almost always necessary in severe cases. Because the ACL can't be stitched back together, a small piece of tendon from another part of your leg is used to replace it.
