Beyonce lost 20 pounds because of the Master Cleanse Diet. But are the rules of the Master Cleanse diet too strict? Watch our video for more information!
Transcript: Though Beyonce admits that she broke the rules and also ate vegetables during her 14-day detox, the Master...
Though Beyonce admits that she broke the rules and also ate vegetables during her 14-day detox, the Master Cleanse is traditionally a liquid diet of water, lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Followers drink from six to 12 glasses of the concoction each day for 10 days, combined with a glass of salt water in the morning and a laxative tea in the evening. All solid food is off limits. The diet was originally intended to treat ulcers and detoxify the body, but more recently followers are drawn to the Lemonade Diet for its promise of maximum weight loss in minimum time. So does the plan actually work? Technically yes, if your goal is simply to see a lower number on the scale. The diet is only 600 to 1200 calories per day -- or about 100 calories per glass. Remember, for weight maintenance, the average male requires 1900-2500 calories per day and the average female requires 1600 -2000 calories per day. To lose weight men should aim for 1600-1900 calories per day and females should aim for 1200-1500 calories per day. No one should dip below 1200 calories per day for weight loss without professional supervision, which is one reason why the Master Cleanse may be dangerous.

Martha's Vineyard Diet »
You can cleanse your digestive system with the Martha's Vineyard diet. Find out how in this video.

The Martha's Vineyard Diet claims to cleanse the digestive system, boost immunity, reduce cellulite and enhance mental clarity. According to the plan's creator, Roni DeLuz, the significant weight loss that occurs on the program is just an added bonus. The detox diet is centered on drinking juices and consuming soups from whole foods and vegetables. There are no foods that require you to chew because the claim of the Martha's Vineyard Detox is that it rests the digestive track, which begins working when you chew food and release chemicals from the salivary glands. However, the truth is, even when you slurp your calories, your digestive tract is always working. People on the plan are instructed to buy several supplements from the diet's website, including an antioxidant berry mix, green drink, food enzymes, and inner cleansing products for the colon and liver. Colonics, coffee enemas, saunas and massages are recommended to help eliminate toxins.

Pros and Cons of the Martha's Vineyard Diet »
The Martha Vineyard's Diet will cause you to become more aware of the food you eat, but is it truly a healthy option? Learn more about the pros and cons of the Martha's Vineyard Diet.

The Martha's Vineyard diet may be beneficial for people trying to make a major lifestyle modification, as the dramatic change in routine can help break unhealthy habits and increase awareness about the quality of food you're eating. Unlike most detox diets, the Martha's Vineyard plan has a little flexibility. There is a 2-day weekend program and a 7-day tune-up program for those not ready to take on the entire 21-day event. That's especially helpful since it's impossible to eat out when you're following the program, so unless you bring your own liquid concoctions, it may put a damper on your social life. It's also worth pointing out that the plan only provides 20 grams of protein per day, which is well below recommended daily intakes and it also lack essential fats and fiber. Plus, the recommendation of colonics and coffee enimas has not been scientifically proven to promote weight loss. The bottom line message - the Martha's Vineyard Diet makes a few good recommendations like eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, but since most people would find it difficult to eat nothing but juices, soups, and supplements, it's not likely to be a long-term solution.

The 48-hour Acai Berry Detox claims to detoxify your digestive system and boost metabolism. Watch this video for a quick tip on the diet's tricks!

Unlike many diet supplements, 48-Hour Acai Berry Detox doesn't claim to control hunger, but it's supposed to reduce bloating, minimize water weight, and flush unwanted waste and toxins from the body, making it easier to shed excess body fat. To take this product, you simply combine four ounces of the liquid concentrate with four to eight ounces of water. It should be consumed four times each day between meals. You need to drink plenty of water when using this liquid formula. You're also encouraged to eat a lot of healthy grains, vegetables, and fruits. The 48 hour acai berry detox is appealing for many reasons: It's easy to buy online for about $15, it's mixed with water, which is something most people need more of, and there's no fat at all. Plus, it has the word "acai" in its name - the miracle berry known for its high antioxidant content. For this reason most people automatically assume all things acai are incredibly good for you. But the truth is that there's no scientific evidence that this product actually assists with real weight loss. While this diet may help relieve constipation, research truly supports eating a diet rich in ALL antioxidants from a variety of fruits and vegetables. For example, red grapes - a glass of red wine - and blueberries are all great sources of antioxidants. The lesson to take away from this and all other seemingly healthy products is to look at the big picture. Don't just focus on one isolated component of your diet like eating acai berry extract.

You can lose up to 9 pounds in just 3 days on the Fruit Flush Diet. So how does it work? The key ingredient is - not surprisingly - fruit. According to the diet's creator, a person's body can be cleansed of toxins by eating the right combination of natural foods. For 3 days, the fruit flush plan lays out a specific combination of fruits and other natural foods to eat. You aren't allowed to add any extras to the list provided, so you allow the body to be cleansed by foods that are naturally high in water, fiber, and natural plant-based medicines. The 3-day detox consists of a pre-flush day, followed by 2 days of fruit flushing. On day one, followers are allowed protein shakes, water, vegetables, and a small portion of lean protein in addition to fruit. Day 2 and 3 of the detox diet consist of a piece of fresh fruit every 2 hours followed by a large salad in the evening. For dessert you can sip on a protein shake made of 12 ounces of water and 5 tablespoons of egg whites or whey protein powder.

The diet's creator, Ann Louise Gittleman, who has a PhD in holistic nutrition, prescribes a slightly different "Fat Flush" diet plan for each season. There are daily year-round staples consisting of drink concoctions like Cranberry water, Spiced Lemon Toddy and Green Life Cocktail, in addition to a probiotic sweetener, whey protein, chia seeds and a range of supplements. The foods and quantities you're allowed to eat change from season to season. For the most part, all food groups are represented including proteins, grains, fruit, vegetables, oils and dairy. But the number of servings that Gittleman prescribes are not consistent with what most nutritionists recommend. For example, the Fat Flush plan includes more servings of protein-rich foods, especially animal protein, and fewer servings of grain and dairy. During some seasons followers are told to eliminate entire categories of foods such as diary in the summer, for no given reason but presumably to reduce calories.

Fad Diets »
Fad diets can have harmful side effects on your body. Check out our video where we discuss potential red flags that you need to be aware of before committing to a diet plan.

the American Dietetic Association does not support completely eliminating certain foods and beverages from your diet. Another red flag of this or any popular diet is that it recommends many supplements that the author developed, which means she stands to gain financially. Finally, "detox" regimens like coffee enemas are often unnecessary and potentially harmful. There's no credible scientific evidence proving that "flushing" and "detoxing" the liver and lymphatic system results in weight loss. There's also no scientific evidence that there's a need to "flush" the liver, much less any real benefit from doing so. The bottom line is that different diet plans and varying rules within each season require a lot of calculating and memorizing, inevitably making it time consuming for the dieter to make sense of it all. Eating seasonal produce is certainly great for your health and the environment, but you don't need a complicated program to reap the rewards of doing so.

Alicia Silverstone's Vegan Diet »

the overarching theme of this vegan diet is to choose KIND over "NASTY" foods, which are defined as meat, dairy, white sugar and processed foods. Once you have a grasp on kind versus nasty foods, it's time to move on to part 2 of the plan. Part 2 of The Kind Diet outlines 3 paths to becoming a vegan: Flirts, Vegans and Superheros. According to Silverstone, flirting is the first step to begin exploring a plant-based diet. The flirting process lasts a few weeks and includes eating at local vegetarian restaurants, shopping at the nearest health food store, buying organic brown rice and unrefined sea salt, taking a yoga class and finally going 4 weeks without beef, chicken or pork. When you're finished flirting, you move on to the vegan phase. To begin the vegan plan, Silverstone suggests getting rid of any meat or dairy products in your home and focusing on building your meals using one quarter grains, one quarter protein and one half vegetables, but insists that having one serving of protein a day is enough. The third and final phase, Superheroes, is more restrictive than even Alicia Silverstone can follow every day. Superheroes avoid all processed foods, phase out soy milk and limit fruit, herbs, spices, nuts, nightshade vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant and "strong" sweeteners like maple syrup and salt.

So does The Kind Diet really live up to its big claims? Research shows that a plant-based diet can be safe and may effectively lower rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers. Following a plant-based diet may also decrease demand for certain natural resources, reducing your carbon footprint. But a few of Silverstone's claims - like the Kind Diet's ability to clear up acne -- don't have any real scientific support. It's also important to remember that any good weight loss plan should also encourage adequate physical activity. Jillian Michaels' Metabolism Diet »
Jilliam Michaels' Metabolism Diet has several steps. Watch this video to learn what anti-nutrients are and why they prevent you from losing weight.

The 3-phase program claims to help you lose weight and feel your best by boosting weight-loss hormones with the 3 R's of hormone power: Remove, Restore and Rebalance. Here's how each phase breaks down: The first step in Michael's Master Your Metabolism program is to eliminate what she calls "antinutrients" from your diet. According to Michaels, antinutrients are foods that contain hydrogenated fats, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners, preservatives and colors. According to Michaels, these foods slow down your metabolism. The second phase works to restore "fat-burning hormone foods" to your diet. Michaels categorizes these foods into 10 "power nutrient" groups including: legumes or peas and beans, alliums like onions and leeks, berries, meat and eggs, colorful fruits and vegetables, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, organic low-fat dairy, and whole grains. The plan stresses all meats, dairy and eggs and most fruits and vegetables are ORGANIC. The 3rd and final phase of the Master Your Metabolism plan -- the rebalancing phase -- focuses on the timing, quantity and combinations of foods for maximum metabolic benefit. In simpler terms that means following these 6 rules: eat breakfast every morning, eat something every 4 hours, eat until you're full, don't eat after 9 p.m., avoid carbohydrates at night, and combine protein, fat and carbohydrates in every meal and snack.

Eating 5 meals a day reduces hunger pangs and curbs cravings. Researchers have just started looking into the benefits of small meals plus snacking, and studies have shown it can reduce overeating and keep your metabolism running at full speed. But it's important to make sure the portion sizes are reasonable and the snacks are nutritionally rich - no junk food here. Which brings us to the 5 Factor Diet's key ingredients: a balanced mix of lean protein -- think chicken or low-fat dairy; complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables; fiber such as whole grains; heart healthy fats like avocados; and water.
