Beyonce lost 20 pounds because of the Master Cleanse Diet. But are the rules of the Master Cleanse diet too strict? Watch our video for more information!
Transcript: Though Beyonce admits that she broke the rules and also ate vegetables during her 14-day detox, the Master...
Though Beyonce admits that she broke the rules and also ate vegetables during her 14-day detox, the Master Cleanse is traditionally a liquid diet of water, lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Followers drink from six to 12 glasses of the concoction each day for 10 days, combined with a glass of salt water in the morning and a laxative tea in the evening. All solid food is off limits. The diet was originally intended to treat ulcers and detoxify the body, but more recently followers are drawn to the Lemonade Diet for its promise of maximum weight loss in minimum time. So does the plan actually work? Technically yes, if your goal is simply to see a lower number on the scale. The diet is only 600 to 1200 calories per day -- or about 100 calories per glass. Remember, for weight maintenance, the average male requires 1900-2500 calories per day and the average female requires 1600 -2000 calories per day. To lose weight men should aim for 1600-1900 calories per day and females should aim for 1200-1500 calories per day. No one should dip below 1200 calories per day for weight loss without professional supervision, which is one reason why the Master Cleanse may be dangerous.

Fad Diets »
Fad diets can have harmful side effects on your body. Check out our video where we discuss potential red flags that you need to be aware of before committing to a diet plan.
Transcript: the American Dietetic Association does not support completely eliminating certain foods and beverages...
the American Dietetic Association does not support completely eliminating certain foods and beverages from your diet. Another red flag of this or any popular diet is that it recommends many supplements that the author developed, which means she stands to gain financially. Finally, "detox" regimens like coffee enemas are often unnecessary and potentially harmful. There's no credible scientific evidence proving that "flushing" and "detoxing" the liver and lymphatic system results in weight loss. There's also no scientific evidence that there's a need to "flush" the liver, much less any real benefit from doing so. The bottom line is that different diet plans and varying rules within each season require a lot of calculating and memorizing, inevitably making it time consuming for the dieter to make sense of it all. Eating seasonal produce is certainly great for your health and the environment, but you don't need a complicated program to reap the rewards of doing so.

Eating on the Baby Food Diet »

The baby food diet, concocted by celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, is the latest 'get slim now' gimmick to win over the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. It calls for a daily 14 servings of pureed fruits, vegetables, grains and meat -- in other words, baby food from your local supermarket -- followed by a healthy ADULT dinner. Tracy Anderson devised the diet with the goal of eliminating toxicity and breaking bad habits but still having your digestive system going, which doesn't happen on liquid cleanses. The 14 servings throughout the day deliver 1,000 calories and the calories included in the nightly meal depend on your own math. The diet is essentially a week-long lesson in portion control. And since baby food is low fat with very little additives, those toxins Tracy Anderson speaks of aren't really present. And Baby Food does contain vitamins and most flavors are gluten-free.

There's no study saying whether this diet really works -- possibly because it's so new that researchers haven't had time for a thorough examination. It's also important to point out that The Baby Food Diet doesn't have any solid guidelines to follow or an exercise component, which is essential for leading an overall healthy lifestyle, not matter what you're eating. Some dieters who have slurped down the pureed veggies and fruits complained of headaches, dizziness and extreme hunger pains. And research on other similar diets has shown that eating small portions can lead to binge eating later on. If the lack of scientific research doesn't speak loudly enough, the high cost of those tiny jars just might, not to mention some dieters have experienced the baby food running right through them on the way to the bathroom. Remember, it's always best to speak with your doctor before committing to a new diet. For more information on celebrity diets that might match your lifestyle check out other videos in this series.

Here's the real deal with Quick Trim: it's a concoction of powerful stimulants, laxatives, and diuretics, or as they call them, supplements that you can pick up at your local drug store. The Burn and Cleanse 14 Day Diet System, which Kim endorses, relies on caffeine, two doses of 400 milligrams to be exact. The supplements also include black pepper and white willow bark extract, which are known to increase the caffeine's affect on your metabolism. Hence the BURN effect. During the evening is when you begin to cleanse yourself, or in other words, flush your system with herbs that promote bowel movements. You'll also take the Iso-Flush during this time, which is designed to reduce the water in your body with more herbs.

The main concerns most doctors have with this product are the stress on the cardio vascular system because of the caffeine levels and dehydration as a result of the herbal laxative and limited use of salt. Additional components of the diet include a fiber-rich fast cleanse that you'll drink before meals consisting of clear soups, gelatin, fruits, and vegetables. As well as an Extreme Burn including more caffeine and herbs. It's hard to put your finger on the diet's benefits, since clinical trials have yet to be performed. But there are studies detailing the adverse effects these featured herbs have on the body. For example the white willow bark extract and green tea extract can increase blood pressure. And Juniper berry, and horsetail extract have been linked to kidney failure and liver damage. As with committing to any new diet, it's always best to speak with your doctor -- especially before trying to keep up with Kim Kardashian

can eating cookies really help you lose weight? According to Snooki, she lost 5 pounds during her first week on the diet, which calls for six 90-calorie cookies a day that replace your breakfast and lunch followed by a healthy dinner - the only time you'll be eating real food all day. A typical cookie diet dinner consists of a lean protein such as chicken or fish and vegetables for a grand total of no more than 500 calories. Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet shares the same waist-slimming secrets as the original "indulgent" plan called The Hollywood Cookie Diet -- Extreme calorie restriction. By replacing entire meals with 4-6 "nutrient-spiked", low-calorie cookies, you only take in about 1,000 calories a day. Not only is that far below what dieters should consume when trying to lose weight, but it's also something that anyone can pull off by eating small meals of about 90 to 150 calories four to six times a day. In other words, there's nothing magic about these baked goods.

Alli is a weight loss aid that blocks the absorption of up to 25 percent of the fat you consume. Although it's only been on the market since June of 2007, alli is not new. In fact, alli is actually a lower dose of the prescription drug orlistat, which has been marketed under the name Xenical since 1999. Although Xenical is available in 120 milligram capsules and alli is sold in 60 milligram doses, the method of action of these lipase inhibitors is the same.

Although alli is sold as an over-the-counter medication, it is only approved for use by overweight individuals who are over the age of 18. GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturers of alli, call the pill a comprehensive program, and recommend that it be combined with a low-fat, low-calorie diet and a healthy exercise plan. When you purchase alli-usually for about $50 a month-you have the option of visiting the company's website. There, you can register as a user and receive a customized exercise and eating plan. A big part of the eating plan is keeping fat to less than 15 grams per meal. Although alli does block some fat, eating too much while on the program can result in side effects.

alli sounds great, but people experience negative effects, like hard to control or loose stools and gas with oily spotting. This medication can reduce the absorption of some important vitamins, resulting in deficiencies in the long run. For this reason, it is recommended to take a multivitamin once a day at bedtime while using alli. In addition, women who are pregnant or breast feeding, people who have had organ transplants, those who have trouble absorbing food and people taking cyclosporine should all avoid alli. People who aren't overweight or obese should also avoid this medication. Although alli can increase weight loss by up to 50 percent more than dieting alone, it should always be combined with a healthy diet and a regular exercise plan.

Don't Fear the Freshman 15 »
Maintaining your ideal weight is basically about maintaining a balance between how many calories you consume and how many you burn. Don’t fear the freshman 15, instead watch this video.

If you're worried about gaining the freshman fifteen, it's wise to evaluate what you're putting into your body. The bottom line is that any increase or decrease in your weight is a direct result of the number of calories you consume versus the number of calories you burn.If you take in the same amount of calories that you use as fuel, there won't be any leftover to store as fat, and your current weight will hold steady. Take in more calories than you burn, however, and you'll end up gaining weight. Because there are 3,500 calories in a pound, it might seem like it would take a long time to gain any weight. But consuming just 100 extra calories a day-say in the form of an additional soda-could add up to a ten pound weight gain in just one year.

One trick is to avoid foods that cause sharp spikes in blood sugar, such as refined carbohydrates like white bread, sugary foods like most cereals or desserts, and sodas. Foods like this will make you ravenous again quickly, as they cause spikes in blood sugar and will lead to crashes, leaving you hungry quickly, which may lead to overeating. It's key to eat a balanced diet, which includes lean proteins like egg whites or a handful of nuts.
