The Martha's Vineyard Diet claims to cleanse the digestive system, boost immunity, reduce cellulite and enhance mental clarity. According to the plan's creator, Roni DeLuz, the significant weight loss that occurs on the program is just an added bonus. The detox diet is centered on drinking juices and consuming soups from whole foods and vegetables. There are no foods that require you to chew because the claim of the Martha's Vineyard Detox is that it rests the digestive track, which begins working when you chew food and release chemicals from the salivary glands. However, the truth is, even when you slurp your calories, your digestive tract is always working. People on the plan are instructed to buy several supplements from the diet's website, including an antioxidant berry mix, green drink, food enzymes, and inner cleansing products for the colon and liver. Colonics, coffee enemas, saunas and massages are recommended to help eliminate toxins.More »

The Martha's Vineyard diet may be beneficial for people trying to make a major lifestyle modification, as the dramatic change in routine can help break unhealthy habits and increase awareness about the quality of food you're eating. Unlike most detox diets, the Martha's Vineyard plan has a little flexibility. There is a 2-day weekend program and a 7-day tune-up program for those not ready to take on the entire 21-day event. That's especially helpful since it's impossible to eat out when you're following the program, so unless you bring your own liquid concoctions, it may put a damper on your social life. It's also worth pointing out that the plan only provides 20 grams of protein per day, which is well below recommended daily intakes and it also lack essential fats and fiber. Plus, the recommendation of colonics and coffee enimas has not been scientifically proven to promote weight loss. The bottom line message - the Martha's Vineyard Diet makes a few good recommendations like eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, but since most people would find it difficult to eat nothing but juices, soups, and supplements, it's not likely to be a long-term solution.More »

The 48-hour Acai Berry Detox claims to detoxify your digestive system and boost metabolism. Watch this video for a quick tip on the diet's tricks!

Unlike many diet supplements, 48-Hour Acai Berry Detox doesn't claim to control hunger, but it's supposed to reduce bloating, minimize water weight, and flush unwanted waste and toxins from the body, making it easier to shed excess body fat. To take this product, you simply combine four ounces of the liquid concentrate with four to eight ounces of water. It should be consumed four times each day between meals. You need to drink plenty of water when using this liquid formula. You're also encouraged to eat a lot of healthy grains, vegetables, and fruits. The 48 hour acai berry detox is appealing for many reasons: It's easy to buy online for about $15, it's mixed with water, which is something most people need more of, and there's no fat at all. Plus, it has the word "acai" in its name - the miracle berry known for its high antioxidant content. For this reason most people automatically assume all things acai are incredibly good for you. But the truth is that there's no scientific evidence that this product actually assists with real weight loss. While this diet may help relieve constipation, research truly supports eating a diet rich in ALL antioxidants from a variety of fruits and vegetables. For example, red grapes - a glass of red wine - and blueberries are all great sources of antioxidants. The lesson to take away from this and all other seemingly healthy products is to look at the big picture. Don't just focus on one isolated component of your diet like eating acai berry extract.More »

You can lose up to 9 pounds in just 3 days on the Fruit Flush Diet. So how does it work? The key ingredient is - not surprisingly - fruit. According to the diet's creator, a person's body can be cleansed of toxins by eating the right combination of natural foods. For 3 days, the fruit flush plan lays out a specific combination of fruits and other natural foods to eat. You aren't allowed to add any extras to the list provided, so you allow the body to be cleansed by foods that are naturally high in water, fiber, and natural plant-based medicines. The 3-day detox consists of a pre-flush day, followed by 2 days of fruit flushing. On day one, followers are allowed protein shakes, water, vegetables, and a small portion of lean protein in addition to fruit. Day 2 and 3 of the detox diet consist of a piece of fresh fruit every 2 hours followed by a large salad in the evening. For dessert you can sip on a protein shake made of 12 ounces of water and 5 tablespoons of egg whites or whey protein powder.More »

The diet's creator, Ann Louise Gittleman, who has a PhD in holistic nutrition, prescribes a slightly different "Fat Flush" diet plan for each season. There are daily year-round staples consisting of drink concoctions like Cranberry water, Spiced Lemon Toddy and Green Life Cocktail, in addition to a probiotic sweetener, whey protein, chia seeds and a range of supplements. The foods and quantities you're allowed to eat change from season to season. For the most part, all food groups are represented including proteins, grains, fruit, vegetables, oils and dairy. But the number of servings that Gittleman prescribes are not consistent with what most nutritionists recommend. For example, the Fat Flush plan includes more servings of protein-rich foods, especially animal protein, and fewer servings of grain and dairy. During some seasons followers are told to eliminate entire categories of foods such as diary in the summer, for no given reason but presumably to reduce calories.More »

The program's 25-minute exercise routines should include a combination of cardio and strength training. As for the 5 cheat days to be used throughout the 5-week program, Pasternak sees the breaks as a way to empower you as the dieter actually helping you reach your goals. Now, there has never been a study showing The 5 Factor Diet works, but this diet might be right for you if you're looking to get your blood sugar under control or you have a limited amount of time and need built-in portion control guides to cut calorie intake. A Tufts University study, conducted in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health, found that when dieters cut their daily calorie intake by 30 percent, they lost an average of 8 percent of body weight after one year. That translates to about 11 pounds of weight loss for a 135-pound person, and nearly 15 pounds for someone who weighs 185. But some doctors are skeptical of the 5 Factor Diet's benefits and have said the diet doesn't address emotional overeating, which a KEY factor of obesity. Moreover, designating a day to "cheat" may trigger additional days of overindulgence and set the stage for unhealthy binging behavior.More »

Almost all meals on the Raw Food Diet are based on the same key ingredients including: fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, dried fruit, and seaweed. All of these foods are high in essential vitamins and lack trans and saturated fats. Not to mention, a diet consisting of these ingredients can result in better digestion, reduced risk of heart disease, increased energy, clearer skin and, of course, weight loss. But before you start stocking your fridge with bundles of broccoli and bunches of bananas, you'll want to make sure your meals are balanced. This means incorporating a fair share of greens, germinated nuts and seeds, protein, fruits and vegetables.More »

Doctors have seen raw foodists experience calcium, iron, zinc and B12 deficiencies. And a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that a raw food diet increased levels of homocysteine - an amino acid in the blood linked to heart disease- due to vitamin B-12 deficiency. Switching to a raw food diet might not be the best choice for children, pregnant or nursing women and people with anemia or at risk for osteoporosis, since research has found that people on the raw food diet often have lower bone mass than those who do not follow a raw food diet. While it's not as harmful as decreased bone mass, some people experience a detoxification reaction when switching to a raw food diet. Symptoms usually include headaches, nausea, and cravings, which can usually last for several days. Sometimes the time commitment required by juicing fruits and vegetables, soaking nuts and dried fruits and blending and dehydrating food is just too much for people with busy lifestyles. Remember, it's always best to speak with your doctor before committing to any new diet. You have your vegetables, which make up 25 to 30 percent of each meal. It's suggested you keep up to one-third of the veggies raw, while the rest are steamed, boiled, baked or sauteed. Beans make up 10% of the daily food intake, which also includes bean products such as tofu, tempeh, and natto. The modern Macrobiotic Diet plan also suggests one to two cups or bowls of soup per day. Miso and shoyu, which are made from fermented soybeans, are always good choices, since this is where you'll find needed proteins. Snacks like nuts and seeds help account for your daily doses of calcium, zinc, B12 and Omega-3 fatty acids. A handful of walnuts, pumpkin seeds or flax can easily get the job done.More »

The Macrobiotic Diet may be very beneficial for women, especially since it's low in saturated fat and high in phytoestrogens, a group of chemicals found in plants that can act like the hormone estrogen, which is useful to balance hormones when menopause sets in or premenstrual syndrome begins. Phytoestrogens are also believed to be helpful in prevention against breast cancer and endometriosis. But the restrictions tied to the diet have brought criticism by nutritionists and doctors, who believe the macrobiotic lifestyle is lacking in certain nutrients, such as protein, vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, and calcium. Remember though, it's always best to speak with your doctor before committing to a new diet. And if you've already started simplifying your diet be sure to keep a watch for energy levels, muscle and joint pain, poor concentration, irritability, and susceptibility to infections. Since there are no clinical trials available for the Blood Type Diet, it's hard to pin down solid health or weight loss benefits linked to the program. However, a self-reported Internet survey with more than 6,600 respondents conducted by D'Adamo found that those following the Blood Type Diet for a period of one month or more saw significant improvement in a variety of health conditions. The most common reported improvement was weight loss. It's important to note that these results are 'self-reported,' and include no reference to how this information was gathered. Like starting any new diet, it's always best to speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian first.
