There are a lot of reasons why a diet may not work. But one of the most common reasons a diet fails is that it's too hard to stick with the plan long enough to see the results you want. But what if you only had to commit for 3 days? That's all the 3-day fruit flush detox requires. The plan was created by Jay Robb, a former bodybuilder and clinical nutritionist with more than 30 years of experience, and it promises to help break addictions to food. You can lose up to 9 pounds in just 3 days on the Fruit Flush Diet. So how does it work? The key ingredient is - not surprisingly - fruit. According to the diet's creator, a person's body can be cleansed of toxins by eating the right combination of natural foods. For 3 days, the fruit flush plan lays out a specific combination of fruits and other natural foods to eat. You aren't allowed to add any extras to the list provided, so you allow the body to be cleansed by foods that are naturally high in water, fiber, and natural plant-based medicines. The 3-day detox consists of a pre-flush day, followed by 2 days of fruit flushing. On day one, followers are allowed protein shakes, water, vegetables, and a small portion of lean protein in addition to fruit. Day 2 and 3 of the detox diet consist of a piece of fresh fruit every 2 hours followed by a large salad in the evening. For dessert you can sip on a protein shake made of 12 ounces of water and 5 tablespoons of egg whites or whey protein powder. The idea behind this diet is that toxins are flushed out of the body along with sodium, which helps to reduce water retention. Though many holistic doctors advocate the health benefits of occasionally flushing out the internal system, there's no scientific proof that detox programs are an effective way to lose weight and keep it off for good. Plus, your body is already equipped with natural detox organs - your liver and kidneys. If you decide to try this or any detox plan, you'll likely see a lower number on the scale simply because you're taking in a very small amount of calories each day. While this diet INCLUDES hydrating fruIts and vegetables, it also EXCLUDES entire food groups that deliver other essential nutrients. Like most detox plans, the Fat Flush for Life Diet claims that it will "flush" and "detoxify" your liver and lymphatic system, ridding them of harmful toxins that can cause weight gain and excessive bloating. But there's one thing very unique about this plan. It takes a SEASONAL approach to diet, exercise and wellness. The diet's creator, Ann Louise Gittleman, who has a PhD in holistic nutrition, prescribes a slightly different "Fat Flush" diet plan for each season. There are daily year-round staples consisting of drink concoctions like Cranberry water, Spiced Lemon Toddy and Green Life Cocktail, in addition to a probiotic sweetener, whey protein, chia seeds and a range of supplements. The foods and quantities you're allowed to eat change from season to season. For the most part, all food groups are represented including proteins, grains, fruit, vegetables, oils and dairy. But the number of servings that Gittleman prescribes are not consistent with what most nutritionists recommend. For example, the Fat Flush plan includes more servings of protein-rich foods, especially animal protein, and fewer servings of grain and dairy. During some seasons followers are told to eliminate entire categories of foods such as diary in the summer, for no given reason but presumably to reduce calories. Gittleman's exercise plan also varies according to season, as well as seasonal wellness plans that call for "detox" regimens such as oil pulling, or swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, coffee enemas, dry skin brush massage and castor oil pack, which involves lying down for an hour with castor-oil soaked flannel cloth covering your abdomen. There are definitely nutritional benefits to the Fat Flush for Life Plan: It promotes portion control, it's high in nutrient-rich vegetables, lean proteins and fish and it encourages limiting consumption of highly processed and refined foods. Unlike many detox diets, it also addresses the importance of exercise. Unfortunately, though, that's not enough to outweigh the diet's nutritional negatives. First, the American Dietetic Association does not support completely eliminating certain foods and beverages from your diet. Another red flag of this or any popular diet is that it recommends many supplements that the author developed, which means she stands to gain financially. Finally, "detox" regimens like coffee enemas are often unnecessary and potentially harmful. There's no credible scientific evidence proving that "flushing" and "detoxing" the liver and lymphatic system results in weight loss. There's also no scientific evidence that there's a need to "flush" the liver, much less any real benefit from doing so. The bottom line is that different diet plans and varying rules within each season require a lot of calculating and memorizing, inevitably making it time consuming for the dieter to make sense of it all. Eating seasonal produce is certainly great for your health and the environment, but you don't need a complicated program to reap the rewards of doing so. "The Master Cleanse," also known as "the lemonade diet" or "maple syrup diet", was first introduced by nutritionist Stanley Burroughs in his book The Master Cleanser in 1976. Thirty years later, famous singer and actress Beyonce Knowles appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show saying that she turned to the Master Cleanse Diet to help her drop 20 pounds in less than 2 weeks for her role in the movie Dream Girls. And so like most things that make their way onto Oprah's set, the Master Cleanse Diet was an overnight sensation. Though Beyonce admits that she broke the rules and also ate vegetables during her 14-day detox, the Master Cleanse is traditionally a liquid diet of water, lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. Followers drink from six to 12 glasses of the concoction each day for 10 days, combined with a glass of salt water in the morning and a laxative tea in the evening. All solid food is off limits. The diet was originally intended to treat ulcers and detoxify the body, but more recently followers are drawn to the Lemonade Diet for its promise of maximum weight loss in minimum time. So does the plan actually work? Technically yes, if your goal is simply to see a lower number on the scale. The diet is only 600 to 1200 calories per day -- or about 100 calories per glass. Remember, for weight maintenance, the average male requires 1900-2500 calories per day and the average female requires 1600 -2000 calories per day. To lose weight men should aim for 1600-1900 calories per day and females should aim for 1200-1500 calories per day. No one should dip below 1200 calories per day for weight loss without professional supervision, which is one reason why the Master Cleanse may be dangerous. Essentially, this regimen is a fast and puts the body into a state of starvation. During starvation your fat cells are burned for energy, but your body also breaks down muscle to provide enough fuel to vital organs such as the brain and heart. Starvation also causes your body to slow down how quickly it burns calories to conserve as much energy as possible. For this reason, any weight that you do lose on the Master Cleanse will be difficult to maintain once you return to a normal diet. More importantly, starving your body of vital nutrients for a prolonged period can wreak havoc on your system. Risks include frequent liquid bowel movements, vitamin deficiency, muscle breakdown, weakened immune system, hair loss, pallid complexion and even brain damage. The bottom line is that there are definitely much safer and more sustainable ways to lose weight that do not incur long-term health risks.
