If theres anything hotter than the Jersey Shore this summer, itll be the Dr. Siegals Cookie Diet. Thanks to Nicole "Snooki" Polizi toting around individually wrapped diet cookies in her over-sized handbag, of course. But can eating cookies really help you lose weight? According to Snooki, she lost 5 pounds during her first week on the diet, which calls for six 90-calorie cookies a day that replace your breakfast and lunch followed by a healthy dinner the only time youll be eating real food all day. A typical cookie diet dinner consists of a lean protein such as chicken or fish and vegetables for a grand total of no more than 500 calories. Dr. Siegals Cookie Diet shares the same waist-slimming secrets as the original indulgent plan called The Hollywood Cookie Diet -- Extreme calorie restriction. By replacing entire meals with 4-6 nutrient-spiked, low-calorie cookies, you only take in about 1,000 calories a day. Not only is that far below what dieters should consume when trying to lose weight, but its also something that anyone can pull off by eating small meals of about 90 to 150 calories four to six times a day. In other words, theres nothing magic about these baked goods. Dr. Siegals cookies come in a variety of flavors including chocolate, oatmeal raisin, coconut, banana and blueberry. The ingredients and nutrition information are kept secret, but we do know that they all contain the same hunger-controlling amino-acid protein blend, as well as milk, eggs, soy and wheat for those who may be allergic to these products. The Hollywood Cookie Diet is a little more open about their products ingredients. Protein-packed chocolate chip, lemon and oatmeal raisin cookies have 4 grams of fiber to help give you that full feeling. But if you look at the ingredient list, youll find that the Hollywood Cookies ingredients mirror those in a typical packaged cookie, with the exception of the Hollywood Premier Protein Blend and 13 vitamins and minerals. Aside from how simple the Hollywood Cookie Diet is, people are attracted to it for the free diet coaching offered via e-mail or phone. Some people on the diet also claim the treat concept erases feelings of deprivation and guilt around snacking. But since no solid research has been done on the Hollywood Cookie Diet, theres no saying if there are any real health benefits. Regardless of which celebrity cookie diet you pick, the big sell of both programs is getting dieters to believe they can eat a sweet treat and lose weight in the process. Its important to remember that each diet comes with its risks, so before you commit to any new program, its always best to speak with your doctor to make sure its safe. And if you find yourself reluctant to reveal the name of your newest nutritional undertaking to your doctor, consider it a sign that its probably just about as bogus as it sounds.
