The supposed benefits of the Paleo Diet come from the elimination of processed foods in favor of whole foods. Because whole foods are free of added sugars, preservatives and other chemicals, supporters also believe this diet will keep you full longer, making it easier to resist snacking or overeating. And many people believe because you're eliminating trans fats, salt, high glycemic-index carbohydrates, refined sugar and grains, you'll not only lose weight, you'll be less likely to develop health problems like heart disease and diabetes. So, what are the downsides to the Paleo Diet? It relies heavily on meat, boosting your saturated fat intake. And while supporters say by eliminating processed foods you protect your heart, we do know that a diet loaded with artery-clogging saturated fat from red meat can lead to inflammation, heart disease and an increased cancer risk.The Paleo Diet also eliminates all dairy, legumes and whole grains, which are loaded with important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, plant-based protein, and fiber. The alkaline diet is gaining popularity from Hollywood to Hyde Park. It's based on the premise that our 21st century diet-high in fats, sugars and processed foods-- tips the Ph balance in our bodies so it becomes too acidic. That, say advocates, is a serious health risk, setting you up for the full range of modern maladies, from diabetes to cancer. Advocates also say that shifting to an alkaline diet restores a healthy Ph and offers protection against disease. That's why the alkaline diet consists of mainly fruits and vegetables, and eliminates all meat, dairy, processed foods and caffeine. But is there any scientific basis for this concept?Not really. You can alter the Ph of your URINE by eating too many acidic or alkaline foods, but that is not a measure of your BODY'S Ph. Your lungs and kidneys regulate the Ph balance of the blood, keeping it at a healthy 7.4 or slightly alkaline. And that process is not influenced by what you eat. On the other hand, adopting a mostly-vegetarian diet may also make you healthier and help you lose weight. Just make sure you don't eat too much refined and processed carbohydrates and fat, and be sure to watch your portion sizes. Remember, though, BALANCE is key. Don't be too restrictive and make sure you get all the nutrients--like protein and B12-that your body needs. B12, for example, you can only get from animal sources or supplements, and although you can get protein from vegetables, you have to make the right choices, such as whole grains and legumes. But what IS Clean Eating and how can it help you?It's almost self-explanatory: eat foods that are as "clean" - meaning, as un-processed and as close to their natural state, as you can get them. The main principle is to eliminate ADDED chemicals, colorings, fats, sugars and sugar syrups found in processed foods. AND to eat only whole foods that come straight from nature--like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean meats. While you don't have to choose organic foods, certain ones may be the clean move. Dairy products and eggs without hormones or antibiotics make sense. And the most pesticide-heavy produce includes strawberries, apples, peaches, grapes, celery, peppers and potatoes.But nature-made food isn't the only focus of clean eating. You'll also be thinking more about nutrients and how they work in your body. If you want to get enough protein, for example, you'll need to think about how much you want from animal sources. Try adding more vegetable protein from foods such as beans and tofu. They're heart-healthy thanks to their low saturated fat content.I know that eliminating processed and packaged food isn't always easy, but you will almost ALWAYS feel better as a result.
